Rome, Italy

Massimo (right), 35, says the Gruppo Pesce Milano is Italy's oldest gay sports club.  The swim group has about 70 members, all guys, and is trying to recruit women.  Even though this was his first time at a gay demonstration, Massimo was busy handing out flyers and posing for pictures.

An unkown Roman jumps in the air during a particularly fun song (Colosseum in background).  The crowd sported a variety of t-shirts, including "I can't even think straight" and "Siamo Nati Liberi" (We Are Born Free).  One of the more popular chants was: "Orgogno, orgogno, orgogno gay. Oggi Roma e tutta gay!" (Pride, pride, gay pride.  Today Rome is completely gay!)

More dancing Romans.  The music selection for the march was an interesting mix of American gay favorites like Madonna and Cher, to Italian gay divas like Mina (described as "a goddess" by one parade-goer).

"La Pepa" poses before the Victor Emmanuel monument in Piazza Venezia.   I ask one attendee how she feels about the abundance of "drag" at the parade, and she explained that last year they had no drag queens or floats - just people marching down the street.  But passersby had no clue what the parade was about - so this year they opted for something more "flamboyant."
